Real Alcazar, Direct Translation: Royal Palace

Another historic building I pass every day I walk to class. This is a royal palace that started out as a Moorish (Arab) fort. It is the oldest royal palace STILL IN USE in Europe and one of the best examples of mudejar architecture on the continent. Built in the 900's by the first Caliph of Andalucia, it was crazy to see the detailing the workers slaved over to complete it. Spanish royalty still resides in the upper levels!

The "Court of the Maidens" is a patio that was created by King Peter I and also happened to be the set of the movie Kingdom of Heaven and had a rumor started about it during the Reconquista. The Christians said  that 100 virigins were demanded on the patio each year as sacrifice.

There were also a bunch of courtyards throughout the palace, these were just my favorite:

The Royal gardens were so cool and so extravagant. They were added on later though, in like the 17th century I want to say. We found some green oranges growing on the trees, and you aren't supposed to eat them, but we were feeling rebellious- so we did. They tasted real sour.

This is "Los Banos de Maria Padilla" one of the mistresses of Peter the Cruel and it is the house that collects all the rain water. It was really pretty and calming to be in there. Along with very cool because it was like 90 degrees.

We found a maze garden! It was crazy how it twisted and turned, and I'll admit we just walked through some trees to get out, not actually following the maze.

It is so cool to me how they left the Islamic influences, after all the violence and hatred of the Reconquista, not to mention everlasting tensions between the two religions, it is amazing they still admired it and validated it's existence.
