Yesterday was the first day of classes, I have a three week intensive period of me taking classes and then its off to the high school! I like the people in my classes, we all have a good time. Whoever designed Sevilla must have been smoking something terribly illegal, because it is the weirdest arrangement of streets! Nowhere near a grid formation, there are random dead ends, and streets randomly change names, it is a wonder anyone knows how to get around! We walked for a half hour trying to find a certain book store, and once we found it, we had to go to the other location, which took another 45 minutes. Oh, and all the banks are open from 9-2.... Guess when I have class... 9-2. I still haven't gotten new Euros! Yesterday though, during the afternoon I went for a run and then swam. I wish the pool didn't close in 2 weeks! It was pretty hot, rumor has it it topped at 115 degrees. At night I went out to meet some friends at a cafe. After that we went wandering and stumbled across the mushroom, "las setas." It is most definitely my favorite thing in Sevilla because of how modern and funky it is. The architecture of the cathedrals is really cool too, because it is so intricate. I really like the people in my program, I have become especially good friends with the athletes to (obviously). The amount of walking we do here is a bit ridiculous though, I can't wait for my Sevici subscription to start (but that won't be for three weeks). Sevici is the bike rental system, so that I can bike instead of walk. I walked 8-9 miles yesterday. So much.
I took these pictures on my walk to class, many of them are the Cathedral- one of the largest in the world
The Plaza de Toros is where they have bull fighting.
The river that borders Seville is called the Guadalquivir and has a lookout station from when the Arabs occupied the Iberian penninsula- about 700 AD!
The wall below was built in the Medieval times, and is obviously still standing as a fortress around the old city-state. The concrete looked to be 2-3 feet thick.
Quick facts on Seville:
700,000 people
Second largest downtown in all of Europe.
